Vancouver, B.C. (August 5, 2016) – The SDN/Network Automation Competition was held last week, on July 26 at the Telus Garden in Vancouver. This unique educational program was offered by Telus and Juniper Networks with the aim of arming students with the skills they need and supplementing the knowledge that they acquire from the classroom. Dan Ronald, our VP Product Management, was given the opportunity to participate as a panel judge along with David Chad (Juniper Networks), Rory Erickson (Plenty of Fish), and Walter Miron (Telus).

Students from Simon Fraser University and University of British Columbia participated in this Software Defined Network (SDN) throwdown challenge in teams of 3. Each of the teams gained valuable knowledge of SDN technology and how it impacts network architecture and services. The students gained insight into the process of developing their own application solution in a real world SDN network automation project.  At the end of the challenge, each group had a chance to present their ideas to the panel of reputable judges. Each group’s idea was judged using a specific set of criteria, including:

  • The team’s level of understanding of the problem
  • The value of the proposed solution
  • The ability to present their solution in a fluid manner.

Congratulations to the group from Simon Fraser University that was named the winner of the SDN throwdown. Their solution was well thought out and the entire group had a very thorough understanding of the overall problem. “I was very impressed and I look forward to seeing this particular group’s academic and professional achievements in the future,” says Dan Ronald. We thank both Telus and Juniper Networks for giving Dan the opportunity to be a part of student innovation, and hope each and every team learned and gained a lot from this valuable experience.
