The Internet of Things (IoT) will completely alter how our buildings operate — are we ready?

Optigo Networks’ CEO, Pook-Ping Yao, recently had the pleasure of speaking at BICSI Winter Conference 2018 on IT, Operational Technology (OT), and the future of our buildings. Whether you’re ready or not, that future is coming fast: by 2020, there will be 20.8B connected devices worldwide, and 37% of those devices will be in commercial buildings.

IoT is the community of connected objects working together at a digital level. IT and OT will help us save money; become more environmentally friendly; and keep tenants comfortable. When it’s smart, OT is a lot like IT. But IT and OT are not the same, and the difference isn’t in cabling. It’s in the stakeholders, lifecycles, security, bandwidth, and skillsets.

There’s a lot of focus on IoT in IT. There’s less focus on how connected OT will change the world, but soon all buildings will have smart windows and sensors in parking stalls. We must prepare to manage these forms of technology in tandem.

Watch the live recording of Ping’s talk, to learn about the differences between IT and OT, best practices in deploying, and why everyone should care about IoT.
