BACnet (Building Automation and Control Network) is the industry standard (ANSI/ASHRAE/ISO 135) that lets building automation devices talk to each other. HVAC, lighting, access control, and fire systems often come from different manufacturers. BACnet gives them a shared language, so they can exchange data instead of operating as disconnected silos.
There are two main flavors: BACnet MS/TP, a serial protocol used for field-level devices like sensors and VAV controllers, and BACnet/IP, which runs over standard Ethernet for supervisory-level communication. Most buildings use both, tied together through a BACnet router.
