Will IoT Disrupt BACnet and BAS?

November 27, 2018, Vancouver, BC – Vancouver-based Optigo Networks, the network connectivity, monitoring, and analytics company, has released a whitepaper on the future of BACnet and the Building Internet of Things (BIoT). This whitepaper probes the biggest questions we face in BACnet, the building automation communications protocol, and our smart buildings today. Interviewees discussed data privacy and ownership, debated whether BACnet will always remain with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and questioned if BACnet will be replaced entirely by the IoT.

Reports consistently show BACnet adoption increasing year over year. As IoT changes the ways we design, manage, and analyze our buildings, there are new conversations we need to be having around building automation. Concerns about BACnet’s cybersecurity in this age of digital warfare, generating a great deal of data on fragile networks, and how BACnet will be managed — and by whom — are particularly pressing issues.

“Today, we face an uncertain future. With our growing world of connectivity and BIoT, there are so many questions we need to answer in the years to come,” says Pook-Ping Yao, CEO of Optigo Networks. “With more cyberattacks every year, what does security look like? When we install more data-generating devices, how do we unify, manage, and analyze that data? As BACnet becomes the foundation for our smart buildings — not just in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, but across all systems — these are questions we need to answer in BACnet.”

Titled “What is the future of BACnet,” this whitepaper digs into key questions in our industry, featuring interviews with experts like Andy McMillan of BACnet International, Ken Sinclair of Automated Buildings, the Father of BACnet Mike Newman, David Fisher of PolarSoft Inc., Carl Neilson of the BACnet Committee, and Adam Rinderle of bluEvolution.

About Optigo Networks

Optigo Networks believes healthy networks are the backbone of smart buildings, and people are at the core. As more buildings embrace IoT, new challenges arise in making our buildings efficient, comfortable, and secure. The network is integral to ensuring these intelligent systems work properly.

At Optigo, we make sure the data moves seamlessly from edge-to-cloud or edge-to-server, uncompromised and on time. We simplify the complex for people who own, manage, and operate smart buildings. With award-winning solutions, we’re the first to address the growing complexity of the thousands of machines in our buildings. We build and monitor healthy networks in a rising number of commercial buildings worldwide.
