Why Optigo Didn’t Just Bolt a Chatbot Onto OptigoVN

Weathered blue door surrounded by densely stacked old books

If you can paste a BACnet error into Claude or ChatGPT for free, why would you pay for help from an AI? It’s a reasonable thing to ask. General-purpose chatbots are good with language, and many people already use one at work.

The first thing to know is that the OptigoVN AI Assistant does run on a large language model, OpenAI’s GPT-5.4. We just didn’t stop at putting a chat window on top of it. The model writes the answers, but the substance comes from data that a public chatbot doesn’t have access to.

Can ChatGPT Troubleshoot a BACnet Network?

The short answer: yes, but I wouldn’t trust it. ChatGPT can explain BACnet reasonably well. Ask it what a BACnet router does or what a duplicate device instance is and you’ll usually get a decent answer, pieced together from forum posts, vendor marketing, and tutorials that are hard to trace back to anyone (hint: they are probably ours!) Some of that material is also just plain wrong, and you can’t check any of it against your own network.

Explaining terms isn’t where troubleshooting gets hard, and our BACnet FAQ covers most of them anyway. The hard part is looking at a dense diagnostic result and recognizing that a cluster of unreachable devices points to one overloaded BACnet router and not a failed segment. People learn to make that call over years of looking at real traffic.

A chatbot hasn’t seen your traffic. If you ask it why a group of devices stopped responding, it can list the usual causes, but it can’t see which one applies to your building, and it may answer confidently (wrong) anyway.

What Does the OptigoVN AI Assistant Run On?

GPT-5.4 handles the language work. It reads a question written in plain English and writes back an answer.

The knowledge, however, comes from a vector database that Optigo Networks populates with its own material, including internal technical documentation, recorded troubleshooting sessions on real networks, and the fixes Optigo has documented over years of working on these problems. When you ask a question, the Assistant retrieves the relevant pieces from that library along with your OptigoVN results, and the model builds its answer from those instead of from whatever it absorbed from the internet.

“A general-purpose model has read a lot about BACnet,” said Ping Yao, our Chief Technology Officer. “But it’s never watched a duplicate address distort the traffic you were using to find it.”

Any company can license the same model, but nobody else has Optigo’s library, which took years of fieldwork to put together.

What Can the Assistant See That a Chatbot Can’t?

The Assistant works from your own network data. It sits inside OptigoVN, which runs its diagnostic suite against a BACnet packet capture and resolves findings to individual devices on both BACnet/IP and MS/TP. When you ask the Assistant a question, it’s working from a device-level result for your building, not a general description of the protocol.

Take the question of whether a fault is on BACnet/IP or MS/TP. The answer decides who and what gets sent on site, because MS/TP faults are often physical problems like wiring, termination, or biasing, and the most common MS/TP mistakes need someone at the panel.

Or take a large group of unreachable devices. The Assistant can name the router it thinks is responsible and lay out why, so you can check its reasoning before you act on it. That’s the same root cause analysis an experienced tech would do, in plain language.

It also closes the loop. After you make a fix, the AI Assistant can quickly read a follow-up capture and to confirm your fixes.

“It gets me to the root cause rather than the symptom, and it will tell me whether my fix actually worked,” said James Gerjevic, a Systems Analyst at Dartmouth College who tested the beta. There are more examples in nine questions to ask the Assistant.

What Won’t the AI Assistant Do?

The Assistant reasons over what’s in your captures and what Optigo has documented. It won’t invent a device it hasn’t seen, and it won’t make calls that need an engineer’s judgment, like whether to schedule an outage, whether the budget is there, or how a client will take the news. It gets you to an answer you can defend and helps you turn the diagnostics into an action list. Your team still makes the decision.

It also has no agency. OptigoVN is a passive program by design, capturing and examining packets, but not able to effect change on the network itself. This carries over to the AI Assistant. It is logically blocked from being able to actively change anything on your network, even if you asked it to, because the data only travels one way.

Put It on Your Worst Building

Does the Optigo Assistant use ChatGPT?

It runs on OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 models, but it isn’t the ChatGPT app. The model handles the language, and the answers come from your OptigoVN results and Optigo’s own library of documentation, troubleshooting sessions, and documented fixes.

Can ChatGPT troubleshoot a BACnet network?

It can explain BACnet concepts, but it can’t see your network. Without a capture and device-level diagnostics, it can list possible causes but can’t tell you which one applies to your building.

Why didn’t Optigo use an off-the-shelf AI tool?

Off-the-shelf tools don’t have Optigo’s specialized BACnet data or documentation, which the Assistant depends on. Optigo built it iteratively with its development partners at Overdrive, tuning each stage along the way.

Does the Assistant run the diagnostics itself?

No. OptigoVN’s diagnostic suite analyzes the capture and resolves findings to individual devices. The Assistant explains those results, recommends documented fixes, and reads a follow-up capture to check whether a fix worked.

Which OptigoVN plans include the Assistant?

The Assistant is included on OptigoVN Solution plans and above. Check it out at www.optigo.net/pricing.
